We have found that the trip is enhanced by full immersion into the culture. We discourage the use of extensive phone and internet for campers.
- Both phone service and internet can be very inconsistent.
- If wi-fi is available, only adult leaders will be given passwords.
- You may also want to check with your carrier about any extra fees you may incur while traveling.
In case of an emergency or a situation where a camper does not have a cell phone, ALL staff members will have cell phones that can be used within reason and for emergencies.
Campers may possess cell phones but they may only be used during free time and in emergency situations. They must be completely turned off and out of sight at the worksites and during morning and evening programs. Cell phones must be on vibrate after lights out.
The use of headphones is restricted to sleeping areas. They will not be allowed at worksites or during evening activities. One of the goals of Workcamp is to help build relationships within your group, with members of other groups and with the people you serve. Conversation and relationship building are hindered when campers are listening to music rather than interacting with the people around them.
We strongly suggest setting up a group text or e-mail that will allow the leader to contact home and let everyone know your group has arrived safely.
